Westinghouse Electric — East Pittsburgh Works in East Pittsburgh PA

Plaintiffs alleged in publicly filed U.S. asbestos personal-injury and wrongful-death litigation that they were allegedly exposed to asbestos while working at the Westinghouse Electric East Pittsburgh Works in East Pittsburgh (Turtle Creek Valley) Pennsylvania. This page documents the East Pittsburgh portion of Westinghouse’s multi-state industrial footprint. For the full corporate summary, see the Westinghouse manufacturer page.

Plant Description and Operating Era

The East Pittsburgh Works — anchor of the Westinghouse Turtle Creek Valley complex — opened in 1894 and served as Westinghouse Electric’s flagship manufacturing site for large motors, generators, switchgear, and industrial control apparatus for nearly a century. At its wartime and postwar peak the plant employed more than 20,000 workers across dozens of buildings straddling East Pittsburgh, Turtle Creek, and Wilmerding boroughs. Production wound down through the late 1970s and early 1980s and the campus largely closed in 1985; portions were subsequently demolished or repurposed.

  • Asbestos-molded De-Ion arc chute plates in Westinghouse switchgear during production, test-cell operation, and rework
  • Asbestos-fabric electrical winding insulation on Westinghouse-produced large motors, generators, and rotating machines built at East Pittsburgh
  • Asbestos sheet gaskets at process piping, boiler flanges, and hydraulic press manifolds
  • Asbestos-cement bulkhead panels in electrical rooms, test cells, and high-voltage laboratories
  • Asbestos sprayed fireproofing on structural steel throughout the East Pittsburgh multi-story shops (pre-1973 EPA ban)
  • Asbestos brake linings on overhead cranes and traction motor test stands
